Lara Beach

Lara Beach, located in the Akamas Peninsula of Pegeia, Cyprus, is one of the island’s most beautiful and untouched beaches. Surrounded by rugged cliffs and wild terrain, the beach is known not just for its natural charm and crystal-clear waters, but most importantly for being a vital nesting ground for endangered sea turtles, including the Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas).

We visited Lara Beach recently and were deeply moved by its raw beauty, but also concerned. The beach is drawing more visitors, and we noticed increasing human activity that threatens its delicate ecosystem. Umbrellas, dogs, and crowded gatherings are becoming more common, all of which are strictly prohibited because they pose serious risks to turtle nests and hatchlings.

Why Lara Beach Needs Protection

Lara Beach is not an ordinary tourist spot. It is a protected conservation area where turtles come to lay their eggs from May to mid-August. Even slight disturbances can have a major impact on the survival of hatchlings. Sadly, many visitors are unaware that planting umbrellas, bringing dogs, or even walking through the central area of the beach can destroy nests hidden just beneath the sand.

We urge every visitor to treat Lara Beach with the respect it deserves.

How to Visit Responsibly

If you’re planning to visit Lara Beach, consider viewing it from above, the cliffs and trails offer incredible vantage points. If you do choose to swim or sunbathe, please use only the left or right ends of the beach and avoid the central nesting zone, which is marked and monitored during nesting season.

Activities

Swimming

The clear waters of Lara Beach are inviting for a swim, but it’s important to avoid the central areas where turtles nest. The beach is less crowded, providing a peaceful swimming experience.

Turtle Watching

One of the main attractions of Lara Beach is the opportunity to see endangered turtles. Visiting during the nesting season from May to mid-August offers the chance to observe these magnificent creatures and their conservation efforts.

Hiking

The surrounding Akamas Peninsula offers beautiful hiking trails, including paths that lead into the Avakas Gorge. These trails provide breathtaking views and the opportunity to explore the region’s natural beauty.

Food and Drinks

Lara Beach has very limited facilities, with only one restaurant in the vicinity. It’s advisable to bring your own refreshments to ensure you have everything you need for the day.

Lifeguards

There are no lifeguards on duty at Lara Beach. Visitors should swim with caution and be mindful of the natural environment to avoid disturbing the turtle nests.

Best beach e have ever been! The road to get there is quite shitty but when you are finally there, it was everything worth it 😉 didnt see any turtels but the water was extremly clear and you can walk up to 40 meters in the ocean and you will still have your head above the water

We are there at the moment Saturday September 7, 2024. Beautiful protected natural beach, we find it clean compared to others. What is true in the previous comments is that you have to love swimming in rolling waves. You must bring food and drinks. The best time to come is from 4 p.m. because there is no shaded area. What is false in the previous comments is that it is really not useful to rent a jeep or a quad, we made the trip in a Nissan Note and we passed 4 city cars on the track and arrived at the end of the track there were 12 city cars. However, you must drive at walking pace for 20 minutes carefully. If you have already been to Adonis Falls, the trail is not more difficult. There are quite a few similar trails in Greece for those who are used to it. I think the alarming comments are meant to dissuade you from coming. Enjoy your visit!

It can be reached via a very long dirt road, but it's worth it 🤗 It's about 20 minutes on the wrong road, but a very beautiful stretch of golden sandy beach awaits you with big waves and few people.

On the isolated, wild and impressive Lara beach, turtles lay eggs, specifically the Mydas turtle species - one of the species of Cypriot fauna, also known as the hawksbill turtle, which is in danger of extinction. Together with the lesser-known Toxevtra beach, they are strictly protected by the relevant services (Specially Protected Areas of the Barcelona Convention and the European Network of Biogenetic Reserves), according to which turtle hunting is strictly prohibited and there are also no plans for the future development of tourism in this area. These turtles nest in the Mediterranean Sea, mainly in Turkey and Cyprus, and this golden sand is one of the most important nesting beaches in the early summer months. Indeed, every 2-4 years the coastline is closed to visitors until the friendly reptiles lay their eggs. Turtle nests are marked with special cages in which they are located, while nests from other tourist beaches that are not suitable as habitats are transported to the hatchery (Lara station).

One of the most iconic landmarks within Akamas national park. Turtles give birth here and when you go for swimming you can see their nests marked by volunteers so that you
don't cause harm to their eggs accidentaly. There is also a small 'exhibition' of photographs sharing information about the turtles and how they are being protected. If you are lucky you can see little turtles being released to the sea.

A terrible gravel dirt road leads here, it is very slow going by car.
Sunburn is guaranteed during the day, so it is recommended to come here after 5 o'clock.
The many turtle nests are a great sight, but unfortunately there is also a lot of garbage on the beach and in the water.

Lara Beach is a unique place where turtle eggs are laid in the sand. It's crucial to read the signs, as access is sometimes restricted to protect the nests. When we visited, the beach was open, and we saw several nests with turtle eggs safeguarded by protective baskets. It was a special experience to witness this remarkable natural wonder.

Superb beach where turtles come to lay their eggs.

+ turtle nests all over the beach protected by metal rings to prevent tourists from stepping on the nests
+ the water is really good and you can walk quite far
+ very quiet / few people (especially at the end of the day) because it is not easy to reach with a city car.

- the road is extremely bad, I strongly advise against getting there by normal city car. You would need a 4x4, quad or buggy preferably. It is still possible to reach it but by driving very slowly and avoiding all the holes...

Unfortunately, we did not have the chance to see any turtles... you have to have the right timing to hope to see them when the eggs hatch.

The beach is beautiful and full of turtles nest. Guess that if you are lucky enough or go at the right moment you can spot some turtles or baby turtles too. The only problem is that the road to come here is a nightmare, rocky and bumpy, you have to be careful, most of all of if you have a rented car.

Beware, there are quite a few steps to get down to the beach, but if you can handle them, it's a gorgeous beach, and we were lucky enough to see a turtle very close to shore.

We couldn’t see any baby turtles, but we did spot a few large ones in the sea. It was an awesome experience, especially for the kids. Be aware that you cannot set up umbrellas in the sand, so it’s better to come here after 4 pm.

roads are a little bumpy by car but we drove a nissan note at 15kph to the beach and was fine

The beach was amazing and had clear water. Went snorkelling and was surprised when we swam with massive sea turtles. You will have to look closely in the video to see one

A very nice, more secluded beach - the most important nesting beach in Cyprus for 2 species of turtles.
The view is amazing! The sand is really nice, so you can stay for sunbathing, but swimming in the sea depends on the wind and the waves.
There are no sunbeds, umbrellas or bar, so you have to go thee prepared with all you need.
The road is country road, no concrete, but you can go by car if you go slowly. You have to leave the car by the trash cans and walk for the last 10 minutes, but it's worth it!

Unfortunately, the beach is full of garbage and plastic of all dimensions so please do a nice gesture for mother nature - take a bag with you and pick up the first 20 pieces of garbage you see and take the bag back to the garbage cans! The baby turtles will appreciate it! 😍💚🐢🐢🐢
