Avakas Gorge Nature Trail
Avakas Gorge Nature Trail is a hidden gem in the Akamas Peninsula, offering one of Cyprus’s most exciting natural adventures. This trail takes you through a stunning landscape shaped by nature over millions of years. As you walk, you’ll see towering limestone walls and lush plants and hear the calming sound of the Avgas River. Ideal for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to enjoy Cyprus’s peaceful beauty, Avakas Gorge promises an unforgettable journey into the island’s wild and untouched terrain.
Length and Difficulty
The Avakas Gorge Nature Trail stretches approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) one way, making for a total round trip of about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). While the trail is relatively short, it varies in difficulty. The first part of the hike is quite accessible, with a well-trodden path that winds through the open countryside. However, as you enter the gorge, the terrain becomes more challenging, with rocky paths, narrow passages, and some scrambling required over more giant boulders. Proper footwear and a reasonable fitness level are recommended to enjoy this adventure fully.

Geological History
Avakas Gorge was formed over millions of years through the erosive power of the Avgas River. The river carved its way through the limestone rock, creating the steep, narrow walls that define today’s gorge. Some gorge sections reach up to 30 meters (98 feet) in height, with walls so close together that they almost touch. This dramatic landscape provides a unique window into the geological processes that have shaped the region.
Flora and Fauna
The gorge is a haven for biodiversity. Its unique microclimate supports various plant species, some of which are endemic to Cyprus. You’ll find lush vegetation clinging to the gorge’s walls, including wild fig trees, oleanders, and the rare endemic Centaurea akamantis. Birdwatchers can delight in spotting several species of birds, including the Cyprus Wheatear and the Bonelli’s Eagle. Keep an eye out for the Cyprus mouflon, a wild sheep native to the island that occasionally appears.

Interesting Facts

Tips for Hikers
Best Time to Visit: The best time to explore the Avakas Gorge is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild and the flora is in full bloom. Summer can be extremely hot, while winter might make the trail slippery and dangerous.
Preparation: Bring plenty of water, especially in the warmer months, and some light snacks. A sturdy pair of hiking boots is essential due to the rocky terrain.
Respect Nature: The gorge is a protected area. Please respect the natural environment by staying on the designated paths and not disturbing the wildlife or plants.
Safety First: Always inform someone about your hiking plans. Mobile reception can be spotty in the gorge, so hiking with a companion is a good idea.
